S/mileage and Babyraids? No! ANGERME and Babyraids JAPAN!

Many groups change their names at some point. AKB48 used to be called Akihabara 48, Momoiro Clover Z didn’t always have a Z, Morning Musume added year designations to become Morning Musume ’14 this year and the (KARI) in UPUPGIRLS (KARI) implies that they may change their name at some point. This week S/mileage and Babyraids announced their new names.

S/mileage announced their new name at their final performance of “S/mileage Live Tour 2014 Aki ~FULL CHARGE~” at Tsutaya O-East on December 17th. From over 10,000 submissions Kana Nakanishi revealed the new name of the group is “ANGERME” which is a portmanteau of the French words “ange” (angel) and “larme” (tear). She explained, “the image is of a kind-hearted angel who would shed many tears”.

(C)UP-FRONT WORKS

Even though it looks like “ANGER ME”, because it is from French, it is pronounced “anjurume” according to the katakana written beneath the Romaji. Several Japanese groups use French words in their names, most famously rock bands L’Arc~en~Ciel (rainbow), Pierrot (clown), Versailles (French city). However, it seems a bit too similar to Ange☆Reve (angel and dream, pronounced “anju reevu”). ANGERME’s 1st single “Taiki Bansei/Otome no Gyakushuu” will be released February 2, 2015.

Babyraids announced their new name during the encore of their first Nippon Budokan solo concert on December 18th. Explaining their desire to become the representative idols of Japan and stealing the hearts of all Japanese people, they would henceforth be known as Babyraids JAPAN.

While this not such a drastic or unusual change since legendary Japanese rock band X added JAPAN to their name when they were planning to make a US debut since there was already an American punk band named X that had been around since the 1970′s. Additionally there is Ayaman JAPAN and the Japanese national soccer teams are commonly referred to as Samurai Japan and Nadeshiko Japan.

At the very least, neither of them changed their name to an unreadable symbol?

Starring Paruru from AKB48! “Ring” Director Nakata’s New Horror Film to be Out Next Year

The title of the new horror film helmed by Hideo Nakata, director of J-horror masterpiece “Ring” (1998), and starring Haruka Shimazaki of AKB48, has been settled as Gekijourei. Twenty years after Nakata vividly portrayed the unnatural phenomena at a film studio in the legendary film, Joyuurei (1995), Nakata moves the stage to the “theater” for this work, and depicts brand new terrors that assail the actresses.

Joyuurei, the debut film of director Nakata, depicts the terror that besieges a new director who discovers an actress that he doesn’t know on a screen test. On the other hand, in Gekijourei, the terror that pulls in Saori, a young actress that plays a supporting role in a new play, is depicted, which befalls upon her while investigating mysterious incidents that occur in a theater where actresses are embroiled in a stormy competition for the leading role.

Haruka Shimazaki

Shimazaki won the role of Saori in an audition open to all the members of AKB48. In the supporting roles, Rika Adachi plays Saori’s best friend who harbors a secret, Kaori; Riho Takada plays Aoi, an actress who is a rival of Saori; and Keita Machida (Gekidan Exile) plays Izumi, a stage crew member who investigates the mysterious incidents with Saori.

According to Nakata, Shimazaki had “a tense face, with an expression mixed with doubt and determination,” during the rehearsals. He comments, “This doubt and determination worked well with the expressions of her character in the film, raising the synergistic effect.” Further, “Whenever Ms. Shimazaki trembled with fear or shook in terror with those ‘large feline eyes’ of hers, I was whooping cries of joy inside. She is someone who has both the horror film looks and a high level of concentration,” he said, praising her talents as a horror film actress.

img_gekijourei_04

On the other hand, Nakata was fully satisfied with Adachi, who, with her “innate sense of cheerfulness, talked to anyone, and loosened up the atmosphere of the set,” saying, “She played a difficult role of someone who keeps a secret from even her best friend, played by Ms. Shimazaki, but she utterly nailed the scene where she lets out her secret, even though the filming became quite gruelling.” Although these days Adachi often displays her talents in variety shows, Nakata has great hopes for her as an actress, saying, “I would love for her to avidly continue working as a film actress as well.”

img_gekijourei_03

Nakata explains that the terror of Gekijourei “Like in Joyuurei, is the ‘devil’ that lurks into the crevices of ‘theater=fiction’. This ‘devil’ won’t stop its ‘invasion of reality’, getting onto the stage during rehearsals, the dressing rooms, the storage warehouse, and to the trap cellar under the stage.” He says, “I am very aware of the sensation of speeding and horrifying grotesqueness,” leading us to expect a Japanese horror film with not just the quiet, sticky kind of horror, but a film that allows us a completely new kind of experience.

The movie Gekijourei is scheduled to be released in the fall of 2015.

Japanese Become Dozing Dreamers During Their Daily Train Commutes

$

It may come as no surprise if you’ve ever been to Japan, but Japanese people often sleep on the train. It doesn’t just happen during the morning rush hour, either. It happens on the way home from work, commuting from one place to another in the afternoon, and even on days off… It seems natural to Japanese (even I sleep on the train while standing!), but to foreigners it’s a rare sight. You can see a video of it that has been uploaded here!

DREAMER – NIPPON INEMURI SONG

This video was created as a promotional advertisement for the real estate information web site HOME’S. Keeping in mind “being tired from commuting on top of being tired from work” and the daily ritual those going back and forth between home and the office experience, HOME’s boasts being number one when it comes to having the largest database of property listings, and therefore is able to help in “finding the best accommodation for you”. Here they’ve strived to make a must-see video that all Japanese who suffer from commuting exhaustion can relate to.

The video features people (dreamers) dozing while on the train set to the music “Waon” by Yuusuke Emoto, and is produced by Kairi Manabe, a noteworthy commercial planner. People will find themselves humming the lyrics and melody of the song, such as the part “Sasatto Kusushita Nugitai yo~”. It shows the image of those dozing on the train (dreamers) as they hold onto their dreams (desires) while dreaming. It’s a short music film that splices together different daily commuting scenes. However, these kinds of scenes might also seem crazy to those around the world. It seems that Japanese might be the only ones in the world who doze on trains… As an aside, it also features statistics such as “those with a longer commuting time tend to be less happy” and the like. It ends with the eye-opening message that “commuting time is not money”…!

The filming took two days and included scenes of over 50 people dozing on trains throughout Tokyo. “inemuri”, or “snoozing”, is now a part of the English, German, and Russian languages, and German cultural anthropologists are now publishing a book with an investigative look at the cultural effects of “snoozing”, so it seems this unique Japanese cultural phenomenon will soon attract worldwide attention… or at least this is what people are saying in Japan. Is it true!? (laugh)

img_CheekyParade_Zepp_23_a

Having been the first Japanese artist to perform on the main stage at the CBGB Music and Film Festival, this was Cheeky Parade’s first solo event since their return to Japan. During the daytime performance, they began with “BUNBUN NINE9′”, ” C.P.U.!?”, “Kizuna PUNKY ROCK!!”, ” Mugendai Shojo ∀”, and “CANDY POP GALAXY BOMB!!” nonstop before taking a break to greet the audience and share their thoughts about the amazing year they had. Reflecting upon the whirlwind year they had, they also shared their hopes for 2015. Mariya Suzuki had one of the more interesting wishes when she said, “I want to become a Power Ranger (Super Sentai)!”

As they returned to the stage, the members showed off their new outfits that featured three different colored jackets (red, black, and navy) and punkish skirts covered in zippers and big stitches. From there, they ended with “Together”, “PiNPON MUSIC”, “Challenger”, “Cheeky Fighter”, and “Cheeky dreamer”.

Things got even wilder during the evening show as Cheeky Parade performed nonstop for over an hour for a total of 14 songs in a row! Having performed 14 songs, they returned the stage for encore with outfits (black T-shirt and denim short pants) from their early days.

img_CheekyParade_Zepp_13_b img_CheekyParade_Zepp_12_b img_CheekyParade_Zepp_11_b img_CheekyParade_Zepp_10_b

In the last, Yuna Sekine shouted saying “Cheeky Parade will definitely make our dream come true”. They ran through 2014 with so many events, and we hope they keep rushing and be active both inside and out Japan 2015.

The release of Cheeky Parade’s photo book (release : February 2015) , and having solo concerts in Osaka and Nagoya in the spring 2015 were also announced at the concert.

Mayu Watanabe Leads White Team to Victory at 4th Annual AKB48 Kouhaku Taikou Uta Gassen!

It was a chilly rainy night for AKB48‘s 4th Annual Red and White Song Festival (AKB48 Kouhaku Taikou Uta Gassen) at Tokyo Dome City Hall on December 16th but the performances inside were more than enough to get the sold out audience sweating. The event is based on NHK’s long-running New Year’s Eve show where two teams compete against each other through musical performances. The difference with AKB48′s version is that there is no male team and it is a “shuffle” event, meaning that none of the songs are done by the original performer.

The event opened with a performance of “Aitakatta” by Team 8, followed by the familiar “Overture” before the teams, numbering over 150 members took to the stage. New York Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka was introduced as one of the judges. Tanaka mentioned that he listened to AKB48 songs on his days off, which prompted the obvious question, “what other groups do you listen to?” Despite being known for being a huge Momoiro Clover Z fan and married to former idol Mai Satoda, Tanaka awkwardly replied that there weren’t any.

"Aitakatta" (Team 8) "Aitakatta" (Team 8) Team Captains Jurina Matsui (Red) and Mayu Watanabe (White) img_AKB48_Kouhaku_opening_2_2 Masahiro Tanaka

Red – “Reborn” (AKB48) – White “Kimi no Koto ga Suki dakara” (AKB48):
With Rina Izuta as the center, the “non-senbatsu” (never elected to be on the A-side of a single) members opened the show with the song made possible through the cooperation of fans. Graduate-to-be Yurina Takashima lead the way for the White Team with one of AKB48′s biggest hit coupling songs.

Red – “Temodemo no Namida” (AKB48) – White – “Avocado janeshi” (AKB48):
The Red Team countered with a performance that fans had not seen for many years. Having discovered founding Team B member Miki Saeki after she had become part of Baito AKB, Yuki Kashiwagi was once again able to perform “Temodemo no Namida” as it had been, even wearing the original costumes from the early days of Team B. The White Team took a different approach with Rena Matsui and Rina Kawaei riding in carts on the arena floor dressed in the fluffy outfits from the cute duet about fruits.

Red – “Soredemo Sukidayo” (Rino Sashihara) – White – “Ookami to Pride” (SKE48): Sakura Miyawaki took on Rino Sashihara’s solo debut single accompanied by a group of dancing children, complete with a young boy doing back handsprings before handing her a love letter. The scene shifted to the lobby as Mayu Watanabe introduced Team 8 members Nagisa Sakaguchi and Ikumi Nakano who descended the escalators as they made their way to the stage where they joined their fellow Team 8 members who were dressed in cute wolf costumes.

Red – “47 no Suteki na Machi he” (AKB48) – White – “Kanpeki Gu~no ne” (Watarirouka Hashiritai): Miyuki Watanabe (Nara), Juri Takahashi (Ibaraki), Meru Tashima (Fukuoka), Miki Nishino (Shizuoka), Shu Yabushita (Osaka), Miori Ichikawa (Saitama), Kanon Kimoto (Aichi), and Tomu Muto (Tokyo) represented their hometowns with a tap dance rendition of the Team 8 song. Wotaku B-Boy crew RAB showed up to break things down as the 9th generation members rocked out to Watarirouka Hashiritai’s classic song. Haruka Shimada even put her hair up in twin-tails in an attempt to be more like Aika Ota but kept getting made fun of by Minami Takahashi.

Red – “Heavy Rotation” (AKB48) – White – “Flying Get” (AKB48): This was a showdown of AKB48′s biggest election result singles as well as acrobatics. Marika Tani (Red Team) got lifted high in the air and gymnasts flew through the air doing flips behind the White Team during “Flying Get”.

"Heavy Rotation" (Red Team) "Flying Get" (White Team)

Red – “Naminori Kakigoori” (Not yet) – White – “Sailor Zombie” (AKB48):
Mako Kojima, Mio Tomonaga, and Saya Kawamoto swam and surfed on waves to Not yet’s classic summer song while Yuria Kizaki, Ryoha Kitagawa, and Haruka Komiyama danced with a herd of zombies.

"Naminori Kakigoori" (Red Team) "Sailor Zombie" (White Team) "Sailor Zombie" (White Team)

Red – “Viva! Hurricane” (AKB48) – White – “Escape” (SKE48):
Rion Azuma on keyboards and Nao Furuhata on saxophone got funky as the other members danced in white dresses and recreated Marilyn Monroe’s iconic scene with a fan located in the floor. Anchored by the ice-cold keyboard work of HKT48′s “cool beauty” Madoka Moriyasu, the White Team struck back with SKE48′s pulsing dance number highlighted by Yuuka Tano’s powerful dance solo.

Red – “Ame no Doubutsuen” (AKB48) – White – “Plastic no Kuchibiru” (AKB48):
The Red Team’s performance of “Ame no Dobutsuen” featured juggling clowns, which is either awesome or terrifying, depending on who you are. Anna Iriyama, Haruka Kodama, Rena Kato, and Miru Shiroma performed a 4-person version of Mariko Shinoda’s solo song and were joined on stage by flash mob dancers disguised at staff and audience members.

Red – “Yasashiku Suru Yori Kiss wo Shite” (Miyuki Watanabe) – Red – “Tomonoura Bojou” (Misaki Iwasaki):
This was a showdown of solo songs with two completely different approaches to interpretation. Haruna Kojima’s performance of Miyuki Watanabe’s solo debut song (release date: December 24) began with her turning down a love letter from AKB48 theater manager Tomonobu Togasaki. Things got crazy as he and all of the managers from the other 48 Groups’ theaters as well as costume designer Shinobu swam under a door to present her with love letters, splashing water all over the stage. Yui Yokoyama took a more serious approach to Misaki Iwasa’s hit enka song, fighting off thugs who “killed” Kenji Kitagawa (the one that the NMB48 song is about) with a sword and even shooting down hard-boiled actor Riki Takeuchi with a machine gun as the stage went black.

Red – “RIVER” (AKB48) – White – “Nandome no Aozora ka?” (Nogizaka 46):
The cast of the AKB49 musical reunited for a rousing rendition of “RIVER” with several comedic moments thrown in, particularly Sae Miyazawa and Youjin Hino’s reactions to seeing Mako Kojima and Nana Owada as Hiroko Yoshinaga (they were “double-cast” meaning they would alternate performances as the same character). Rino Sashihara blurred the borders between AKB48 and Nogizaka 46 further by appearing on stage with several of the group’s members under the name “Sashizaka 46″ and performing one of their songs.

"RIVER" (Red Team) "Nandome no Aozora ka?" (White Team)

Red – “Seventh Chord” (Atsuko Maeda) – White – “Ai no Sonzai” (AKB48):
A 6-piece band was wheeled onstage and assembled in minutes for the battle between Kansai and Kanto; Sayaka Yamamoto vs Minami Takahashi. “Saya-nee” strummed her guitar and rocked out to Atsuko Maeda’s “Seventh Chord” but “Takamina” had brought legendary guitarist Akira Takasaki from Loudness to add some blistering solos to “Ai no Sonzai”.

"Seventh Chord" (Red Team) "Seventh Chord" (Red Team) "Ai no Sonzai" (White Team) "Ai no Sonzai" (White Team)

Red – “Kamonegikkusu” (NMB48) – White – “Migikata” (Atsuko Maeda):
For their final song of the night, captain Jurina Matsui lead the Red Team in the dance number “Kamonegikkusu” while fighting off a SWAT team that descended from the ceiling on ropes, ending with a shootout. White Team captain Mayu Watanabe took to the stage solo in a Cinderella-like dress to perform a beautiful cover of Atsuko Maeda’s “Migikata” as confetti fluttered through the arena.

"Kamonegikkusu" (Red Team) "Migikata" (White Team) "Migikata" (White Team)

While the votes from the viewers in the theaters across Japan and in the arena were being counted and the judges were making their decisions, there were performances of the coupling songs from “Kibouteki Refrain”.

"Seifuku no Hane" (Team 8) "Ima, Happy" (Baragumi) "Ambulance" (Yurigumi) "Ambulance" (Yurigumi) "Utaitai" (Katareagumi)

Mayu Watanabe and Minami Takahashi were worried as the Red Team won the movie theater and arena votes, especially since they had never been on a winning team in the 4 year history of the AKB48 Kouhaku. However, tonight was the night that the jinx was broken as the White Team won over a majority of the judges votes to win 6-4.

img_AKB48_Kouhaku_results_1_2 img_AKB48_Kouhaku_results_2_2 img_AKB48_Kouhaku_results_3_2 img_AKB48_Kouhaku_results_4_2 img_AKB48_Kouhaku_results_5_2 img_AKB48_Kouhaku_results_6_2

All of the remaining members performed “Kibouteki Refrain” for the last song of the night but, it wouldn’t be an AKB48 event without some sort of big announcement. More specific release dates for all the documentaries were announced as well as the next AKB48 documentary which should be full of rare Minami Takahashi footage. Until then, keep your eyes open for AKB48′s 4th Kouhaku Taikou Utagassen DVD because it was an amazing night that you will definitely want to see again and again!

Keyhole Sweater Goes Viral and Unlocks a Wave of Creativity in Japanese Twittersphere

A turtleneck sweater is meant to keep the neck warm during those cold winter months but recently a particular style of turtleneck has caused many to get hot under the collar for a different reason.

Triggered by a tweet from female cosplayer Myako, the keyhole turtleneck became a new fetish item!
This may be seen as an evolution in the fetish of vertically ribbed turtlenecks, which also draw attention to the curves of those wearing them. We know we shouldn’t stare but it’s difficult to keep ourselves from NOT staring!

In reality, this sweater is not as popular in Japan as you would think because it is considered “too sexy and revealing”. However, a picture where a woman had put a box of tissues into the keyhole (in order to solve the “problem”) created a equally large buzz on the Internet.

With so many people catching colds during the winter, why not just have them stored in your sweater for easy access? No more digging through your pockets or purse! Just be careful if you’re near anyone else who needs them because something awkward might happen.

Affected to this trend, boys also started enjoying the sexy sweater.

They even cut normal sweaters to make their own!

Leave it to Japan to jump on a trend and come up with some unexpected results!

Who and Why Dies on STARMARIE’s New Single”Who Killed Circus”?

STARMARIE, an all-female Japanese pop group originally comprised of two members, officially added three additional members and began to officially promote their new EP album this year on June 25th, 2014. Their debut single, “Who Killed Circus,” was released this year on December 3rd, 2014 and ranked 2nd in the ORICON indies weekly ranking of December 1st to December 7th.
img-starmarie-04

Among STARMARIE’s ever-growing domestic and international fan base, the song has been hyped as the scariest song in STARMARIE’s musical history. You can watch the performance, with the lyrics included, at the following YouTube link.

However, rather than being scary, it may be more accurate to characterize the song as being full of drama and suspense. The song opens with chilling organ music, which could evoke scenes from the “Phantom of the Opera.” While the song’s melody repetitively modulates, a shocking and thrilling story is slowly introduced.

From there, the listener is chased by an invisible sense of fear, and we feel desperate to escape it while running for our lives through a dimly lit corridor. Suddenly, a figure comes into view.

One might place this song in the horror genre with its melancholic voices drifting throughout. It’s reflective of STARMARIE’s macabre style as 21 songs of the group’s 37 songs refer to the dead. Perhaps this is why STARMARIE is also known as “Murder idol unit” in Japan. However, current member, Shino Takanori, says that although it is actually their producer, Takatani, who writes the lyrics, the girls bring the colorful and dramatic storytelling to life.

Even though the title of the song is “Who Killed Circus,” both the living and the dead strangely appear together in the lyrics. The song is like a puzzle, in which the relationship between the dead and the living is a mystery that the listeners themselves need to solve. This is one of the main appeals of the song, but also the charm goes beyond the surface. The mysterious allure of this song has created an exciting discussion among fans, who give their own individual interpretations of the song’s lyric. With so many interpretations, the song creates an additional sense of fun. Borrowing the words of one fan, let’s examine his interpretation of the song below:

“Among the people who appear in ‘Who is killed circus ‘, only two people are alive; ‘Mom’ and ‘you.’ The setting is a hotel where the deceased gather. The song’s protagonist, having recently died, wanders lost through the hotel. ‘You’ chase the protagonist around the hotel trying to catch a glimpse, but because you are still alive, you cannot see the
world of the dead even though you live among them. ” Kaede Watanabe.

In addition to “Who Killed Circus,” STARMARIE has released two other singles, including “The Ball of Midnight Rhapsody,” and “The remaining 124 days of Cinderella.” “The Ball of Midnight Rhapsody” is an updated version that originally appeared in the album, “Fantasy World 3,” and was first recorded when the group was known as Starmarie (in lower caps) and included only three members.

On January 2, 2015, STARMARIE is scheduled to perform a solo live show titled “STARMARIE’s single Circus ~ DARK FANTASY WORLD’s beginning” at TSUTAYA O-EAST. Presently, both the total event budget, which includes a continuation of the five-member system, and the planned live show are hints of events to come for STARMARIE in 2015.

The group has already had an active start internationally. In the beginning of 2014, STARMARIE performed live in three U.S. locations: Los Angeles, Texas, and New York. Additionally, the group preformed in both the Philippines and Taiwan, where STARMARIE’s popularity with fans reached soaring new heights. This has a set a new benchmark for the overseas tours scheduled for the upcoming year. STARMARIE plans to perform solo shows again in the Philippines and Taiwan, and of course domestically in various places around Japan. According to current group member, Takanori Shino, STARMARIE will be “transporting their feet” all over the world from the start of the year. They continue to hope for this dream to come true. To that end, could the upcoming solo show at TSUTAYA O-EAST be a sign of STARMARIE moving closer to their goal?
STARMARIE is gradually becoming an internationally recognizable name in the music world.
img-starmarie-02 img-starmarie-03

Let us end with a quote from current member, Kinoshita, describing the group’s future desires:

“STARMARIE is celebrating its 7th anniversary and will soon be meeting its 8th. Our fans have continued to ask us when our music will go on sale and when we will rise to the top of the charts. Therefore, our goals this year are to sell our music and rise in popularity both in Japan and overseas. This is the year STARMARIE will realize its dreams!”

Half‐naked Rock Band Becomes Hot Topic in Japan! Heaviest Rock Band Ever?

The success of BABYMETAL in the world of heavy metal is still fresh in our memory. However, it seems that there are even some things that the Fox God does not know about.

We recently found the “heaviest metalcore band in Japan. They are featured in the latest commercial for Docomo Healthcare, and you won’t believe how heavy they are!

Check out their brain-rattling heavy bass sound, crushing drums, grinding guitars, and growling vocals. It’s like nothing you have ever seen or heard before!

img_moveband_02 img_moveband_05 img_moveband_03 img_moveband_04

Now you understand, don’t you?

This is a new commercial for a health-management wristband featuring four sumo wrestlers playing hard rock music as a band. In the clip, sumo wrestlers Toyonoshima, Gagamaru, Tenkaiho and Asahisho, all currently active, put together the four-piece Rockin’ Sumo Band. The four of them shout out the product’s name “Move band” throughout the commercial.

The Sumo Rock Band isn’t the newest awesome band from Japan, the wrestlers were actually performing to prerecorded music and were not playing the instruments. So they’re an “air band” just like Golden Bomber, sort of.

The commercial ends with them raising their fists, while numbers representing the calories burned during the performance appear on screen.

Their swaying bodies rock our mind insanely. We came to realize that body weight doesn’t matter to the gods of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Let’s shout!

As we reported earlier, Miyuki Watanabe of NMB48 will be releasing her first solo single “Yasashiku Suru Yori Kiss wo Shite” (Rather than Treating Me Kindly, Kiss Me) on December 24.
The song was created under the concept “a full-scale homage to the eighties”, the decade when idols with mass appeal were created perfectly by the Japanese entertainment industry.

Today, a short glimpse of the music video for the song has been uploaded on AKB48′s official YouTube channel.
As the artworks has been revealed a few days ago, it’s full of Japanese ’80s stuffs!!!

The “women must be cute” is so Japanese ’80s. Maybe, in those days, every Japanese woman dreamt to become cute as popular girlish idols like Seiko Matsuda, Akina Nakamori, Kyoko Koizumi, and so on.
Now, Miyuki Watanabe, as a modern idol, portrays the 80′s idol with full of homage in this MV.
Check it out and enjoy recollecting on the Japanese old & cute days!!

Those sweet scenes remind us the 80′s super popular anime series “Touch”, originally a high school baseball manga by Mitsuru Adachi. It’d be so lovely for Japanese who was young in those days.

Don’t forget to check the coupling track “Harukaze Pianissimo” that is also filled with ’80s taste!

Babyraids’ Lightning Attack at Their First Budokan Concert!

babyraids-budokan-oneman-07

Babyraids realized their dream of having a solo concert at the legendary Nippon Budokan on December 18, 2014.

Titled “Babyraids Densetsu no Raibu! -Tora Tora Ichiban-”, Babyraids’ first Budokan concert was almost 3 hour 31-song set of the members performing with a 5-piece live band. In addition to the several thousand loyal “Tora-Gaa” (Babyraids name for fans, comes from “Toranomon” where they perform at Pony Canyon headquarters and “Guardian”), Rena Matsui (SKE48/Nogizaka 46), members of PASSPO☆, 9nine, SUPER☆GiRLS, Cheeky Parade, Pla2me, as well as countless other idols were witnesses to Babyraids’ historic night.

Introduced by a video with 5 animated tigers running, Babyraids made their dynamic entry by pouncing out of trapdoors on the stage and went right into their debut single “Babyraids”, they continued with “Baby Ambitious”, “Level. 1″, and “Bucchake Rock’n Hachakke Roll”.

Following a video featuring Erika Denya dressed in a Santa outfit and playing out an imaginary date scenario, Babyraids went into a medley, which featured “Saijoukyuu”, “Together! Together! Together!”, Supernova” with an intro solo by Manatsu Hayashi, and the towel-waving anthems “Christmas ga Rival” and “Natsuiro Party”. Next was “Magic Hour” and “Big☆Star” which ended with the 5 members making a star with their fingers, their nails with stars painted on them just for that moment.

babyraids-budokan-oneman-07

Launching into their Oricon top 5 ranked 8th single “Tora Tora Tiger” after teaching the arena the choreography for the chorus, things shifted into high gear with “Get Over Night” and “Rock on Darling”. The Budokan glowed red as blue and green lasers zipped along the stage and balcony during “S.O.K.” and Rikako Oya waved a Babyraids flag wildly during “Charinko Idol” as the audience jumped and spun along to the music.

babyraids-budokan-oneman-04 babyraids-budokan-oneman-02 babyraids-budokan-oneman-03 babyraids-budokan-oneman-05 babyraids-budokan-oneman-06

The arena went dark and when the lights came back on a Babyraids that had never been seen before emerged. They were dressed in fluffy white dresses and were wearing high heels! Performing “Fuyu no Mahou” as fog enveloped the stage, they then were raised 3 meters on platforms coming out of the trapdoors while singing “Namida no Namae”. Moving to the platform in the middle of the arena seats, they sang “SMILE” before descending into the floor of the Budokan for another costume change as the screen showed a video documenting their journey to this magical night, separating their milestones into 8 different levels.

Returning dressed in sparkly halter-tops and skirts with LED shoes, they debuted “2years”, a song that was only sold outside the Budokan that night, as the screen showed a collection of pictures from their brief 2-year history. The concert ended with the high powered “Atarashii Sekai”, “Michishirube” accompanied by pyrotechnics that shot up to the 2nd floor balcony, “Baby Revolution”, and “TIGER SOUL”.

babyraids-budokan-oneman-01

Starting the encore dressed in their Budokan t-shirts they performed ” GET OVER NIGHT” again before the screen revealed some announcements for Babyraids’ 2015. In the spring, they would release their 9th single and the DVD for the Budokan concert as well as embarking on a nationwide 17-city tour. They also hinted at “something” being planned in Tokyo and Osaka for the summer. Even though having a concert at the revered Nippon Budokan would normally reduce the performers to tears, leader Erika Denya expressed her regret that they had not managed to fill all the seats despite acquiring 13,872 signatures to petition the event. Continuing on, she explained that because of these feelings, Babyraids would change their name to Babyraids JAPAN, in order to “capture” the people of Japan (much like the national soccer teams Samurai JAPAN and Nadeshiko Japan), fill the Budokan, appear at NHK’s Kohaku Utagassen, and become “national idols of Japan” (like AKB48).

After dropping such a heavy announcement on the audience, the encore continued with “JUMP”, mixing together the power of Babyraids and the audience as they pumped their fists and jumped tirelessly. Of course the night would not be complete without a performance of their first major hit ” Koyomi no ue wa December” which thrust them into the national spotlight (it was used in the 2013 NHK drama “Ama-chan”). As they had done at their Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall in July, where they had made the dramatic ultimatum “Budokan or breakup”, they ended the night by performing “‘Babyraids’ as Babyraids”.

While making it to the Budokan is an auspicious milestone in any artist’s career, this is only the beginning for the upstart group that clawed and scratched their way this far. The DVD for Babyraids’ first Budokan concert will be on sale in the spring of 2015 so if you weren’t there, you can experience all of the excitement and power that was that legendary night. Unsurprisingly, just as Babyraids had done before at so many other idol events, there were idol groups waiting outside the Budokan trying to “catch” people entering and leaving the Budokan.

UPUPGIRLS (KARI) Level Up Their Experience Points With Military Training

Maybe someone forgot to tell UPUPGIRLS (KARI) that the phrase “Idol Sengoku Jidai” (Idol Warring States Period) doesn’t mean that they actually have to go to war but, they went and did some military training anyway.

Calling their performances “challenges” (chousen), climbing Mt. Fuji to perform “Zenryoku! Pump Up!!” and performing 2-hour nonstop concerts, UPUPGIRLS (KARI) are far removed from conventional idols. On December 19th they traveled to Utsunomiya Airbase in Tochigi prefecture to train with Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Forces and perform at their year-end party.

upupgirlskakkokari_JSDF_2

UPUPGIRLS (KARI) may have worn military-themed outfits for their Akasaka Halloween performance a few months ago but, training at an actual military base surrounded by helicopters and tanks is a lot different than cute cosplay. In addition to belly-crawling while holding rifles, marching, and circuit training, UPUPGIRLS (KARI) also helped pound mochi (a common New Year’s tradition in Japan) before performing for 2,000 Ground Self-Defense Force troops. The 9-song set included “Ichiban Girls, “UPUP Typhoon”, “UPPER ROCK”, “Chopper☆Chopper”, and “Uppercut”, as well as the Morning Musume classic “Love Machine”. With the goal of performing at the revered Nippon Budokan in 2015, it looks like UPUPGIRLS (KARI) have passed through another checkpoint in their mission.

Dance Is Not a Crime! FEMM Dances Agains Japan’s Dancing Ban Law

img-femm-dance-ban-law

Far East Mention Mannequins, the duo of LuLa and RiRi, published a video in which they are dancing to to their song “Fxxk Boyz Get Money” at Sentou (Japanese public bath).

This video looks different from usual MV. So, why they are dancing? The subtitles which appear in the beginning of the videos say “Dance ha Hanzai Janai”, meaning “Dance is not a crime”, is the message of the video.

This is stupid, but in Japan, dancing at night clubs past midnight has been banned legally. The law that banned late night dancing in Japan’s clubs has been lifted ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.Banning dancing at public venues came about in 1948, when Japan passed a law attempting to stamp out prostitution linked to dance halls.

However, in recent events it appeared that the government was moving towards changing the law to improve the country’s economy. Members of the Japanese Cabinet had approved alterations to this law that would have allowed people to dance past midnight.

But this still have restrictions. Lawmakers say light levels cannot be below a certain level. The lighting must now be brighter than 10 lux, or about as much as in a movie theatre before a show starts, to discourage crimes and bad behaviour. In addition, with the dissolution of the lower house in Japan earlier December 2014, the amendment might be scrapped.

Obviously, dance is not a crime. Everyone knows that the law totally doesn’t make sense. Let’s fight for deregulation of the law with FEMM!
